After spending some time going around town and putting out flyers, Jack suggested that they head over to the local coffee shop. Perky's was a staple in town and had been run by the same woman aptly named Perky for many years. The coffee was the best in town, and it was such a welcoming atmosphere that Jack felt like Ava would be comfortable there. They also could leave some additional flyers. Perky knew everybody and would be sure to hand them out.

As they went into Perky's, the little bell above the door chimed, announcing their arrival. Several people said hello to Jack as he walked in. It was great to live in a town where you'd been your whole life because people were always so friendly. They knew his whole life history, and he didn’t have to worry about being judged. The entire town felt like family to him.

There was the soft murmur of conversations filling the space and, of course, the wonderful scent of coffee filling the air. He noticed that Ava's posture seemed to relax as she saw the charm of the town in the little coffee shop where everybody congregated. It was in moments like these where she seemed to let her guard down a little bit, and he caught glimpses of the person beneath that facade of strength that she wore like armor.

They walked up to the counter, and Jack handed a flyer to the young woman behind the register. He explained the situation and asked her to hang it up on their bulletin board as well as lay a few by the front register. She was happy to do so.

"Can I get you anything?” the woman asked looking at Ava.

"Oh, just a cup of coffee, please.”

Jack ordered the same, and then they walked over to a small table nearby to wait. Ava looked around the coffee shop, obviously watching the different patrons read their books, work on their laptops, or just have conversations with friends. Today, it wasn't packed, so it gave her that semblance of anonymity that she seemed to want so much.

The table they chose was near a window that not only overlooked the town square, but the surrounding mountains. "This is just beautiful," she said as she stared out. He took a moment to look at her profile. She had the perfect little button nose, big full lips and the most crystal clear blue eyes he'd ever seen. And of course there was that red hair that had caused his own head to turn the first time he saw her.

Jack kept trying not to think about the night she’d heard him playing guitar. For a moment, he’d been embarrassed. Vulnerable, even. But then he’d seen how she looked at him. Ogled him at one point. It was cute.

Ava’s eyes lingered on the view, and she looked like she was a million miles away, yet sitting right across from him. There was a tranquility to her in that moment, but he could tell she was also wrestling with whatever was going on in her life.
